DBT
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy designed for individuals who experience intense emotions. Developed by Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, ABPP, DBT was initially created to help those with borderline personality disorder but has since proven effective for various other mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and personality disorders.
DBT focuses on maintaining client safety by reducing suicidal and self-harming behaviors (if applicable) and minimizing behaviors that interfere with productive therapy. It helps clients achieve their goals and improves their quality of life by addressing obstacles such as mental health conditions and relationship issues. DBT is designed to teach clients new skills to replace unhelpful behaviors and promote positive change.
DBT can be provided individually or in a group setting, both offering access to DBT Coaching. This coaching supports clients in applying the skills they learn in therapy to their everyday lives, particularly during crises, helping them effectively navigate challenges and maintain progress.
If you’re ready to take the next step in your wellness journey, DBT could be the right fit for you!
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly structured therapy that allows the client to focus briefly on a particular trauma memory, while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements). This is done to assist with the reduction of vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memory or memories.
EMDR is backed by psychological research and has been proven to be an effective psychotherapy method that helps clients recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms.
EMDR is different than other psychotherapies as it does not require in depth conversation about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. Instead, EMDR relies on the brain’s natural healing process. The brain has a natural way to recover from traumatic memories and events. When something traumatic occurs, in order to heal, the amygdala (the alarm signal for stressful events), has to communicate to the hippocampus (which assists with learning, including memories about safety and danger), and the prefrontal cortex (which analyzes and controls behavior and emotion). Most times traumatic experiences can be managed and resolved without assistance, but they may not be processed without help; this is where EMDR comes into play.
If you are struggling with past traumatic events, this may be the therapy for you! We only have online availability for EMDR at this time.
Couples Counseling
At Very Unique Wellness, we want to ensure wellness for our clients and their relationships. It all begins with acknowledging that there may be challenges in your relationship. Navigating these issues alone can be tough, but our clinicians are here to support you. We utilize the Gottman Method, a well-researched and effective approach to couples therapy.
The Gottman Method starts with a detailed assessment of your relationship and applies research-based interventions based on the Sound Relationship House Theory. The goal is to improve unhealthy communication, enhance intimacy, respect, and affection, reduce feelings of stagnation, and foster greater empathy and understanding between partners.
Our couples counselors can help you work through issues related to intimacy, infidelity, conflicts, and other challenges your relationship may face. For your convenience, couples counseling is available virtually and in person with select therapists.
Psychotherapy
We recognize that everyone’s needs and experiences are unique. To meet you where you are, we use a variety of therapeutic approaches tailored to your specific situation. Our clinicians are skilled in several modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Motivational Interviewing.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is effective in addressing a wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety disorders, relationship difficulties, and severe mental illness. Research shows that CBT can lead to significant improvements in daily functioning and overall quality of life.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an action-oriented approach that helps clients stop avoiding and struggling with inner emotions. Instead, ACT encourages accepting these feelings as natural responses to life’s challenges, enabling clients to move forward without being held back by them.
Motivational Interviewing is a short-term counseling method designed to help clients navigate their own conflicting emotions and uncertainties. It focuses on uncovering the internal motivation needed to make positive changes, acknowledging how difficult it can be to take those steps.
Whatever your needs, we’re confident in our ability to guide you toward wellness!
Family Counseling
Family life can be full of love, but it can also come with challenges. Stress, miscommunication, unresolved conflict, or life transitions can strain relationships between parents, children, and siblings. Family counseling creates a safe and supportive space where everyone has the opportunity to be heard and understood.
Through therapy, families can strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and learn healthier ways to manage conflict. The goal is to create a more connected and balanced family system where members feel supported and respected. Sessions are available virtually or in person to meet your family’s needs.
Family counseling can also be beneficial during major life adjustments, such as divorce, blending families, or parenting teenagers. With the guidance of a trained clinician, families gain the tools to navigate change, deepen connection, and move forward together with greater understanding. started!
Art Therapy
Art Therapy is a unique form of psychotherapy that combines creative expression with traditional therapeutic techniques. It allows clients to use art as a way to explore emotions, improve self-awareness, and promote healing. Through drawing, painting, sculpting, or other creative outlets, clients can often express feelings that may be difficult to put into words.
Art Therapy is especially effective for individuals managing stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, or major life transitions. It offers a safe and supportive environment where creative work becomes a pathway to deeper understanding and personal growth. Clients do not need to have artistic skills to benefit—what matters most is the process of expression, not the final product.
Heather Conley, our Art Therapist, creates a welcoming space for clients to connect with their inner world and gain new perspectives through creative exploration. With her guidance, art becomes a tool for processing emotions, developing coping strategies, and finding empowerment in one’s own healing journey.
Whether you’re looking to reduce stress, process trauma, or simply connect with yourself in new ways, Art Therapy can provide a powerful opportunity for growth and transformation.
